What is perfume?

Difference Between Perfume And Body Mist

Perfume, the very word, conjures up images of all things exotic and enigmatic. It originates from the Latin word 'perfumare,' which means to smoke through, hinting at the intricate process of extracting the essence of nature's bounty to create a captivating scent.

Perfume is a concoction of highly concentrated essential oils extracted naturally from flowers, fruits, or spices or through synthetic means combined with solvents like alcohol or water. The result is a blend of aromatic notes ranging from sweet and floral to woody and spicy.

The art of perfumery dates back centuries and has a rich history associated with it. It is believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley civilization. Back then, perfumes were primarily used by the wealthy to mask unpleasant body odors and signify their social status. Today, perfumes are more than just a status symbol. They have become an essential part of our daily grooming routine, allowing us to express our individuality and leave a lasting impression wherever we go.

The concentration of each perfume determines its strength and longevity. Generally, perfumes are applied to clothes and have a longer staying power than body mist or other fragrances. The higher the concentration, the more intense and long-lasting the fragrance, but also the higher the cost.1

Types of concentration include:

1. Eau Fraiche

Eau Fraiche has a lower oil content in their perfume ranging from 1% to 3%, yet it lasts up to one to two hours, similar to Eau de Cologne. Eau Fraiche often has a low scent concentration and a high water content.

2. Eau de Cologne

Eau de Cologne (EDC), which has a scent concentration of around 2% to 5% and lasts more than Eau Fraiche, is one of the most popular varieties of perfume with the lowest concentration. Eau de Cologne is the least pricy of the scent varieties listed below and is often available in larger quantities, such as conventional splash-style bottles.

3. Eau de Toilette

Many Eau de Parfum perfumes are also available in Eau de Toilette (EDT), a less expensive version of the same aroma. The top notes are more prominent, making it pleasant when first applied; this is why EDT perfumes are so popular throughout the summer. Eau de Toilette fragrances typically have a scent concentration of 8% to 12% and last about five hours.

4. Eau de Parfum

Eau de Parfum (EDP) is one of the most popular perfumes and fragrance categories, with a scent concentration of 15% to 20% and longevity of approximately six hours. The top notes of Eau de Parfum evaporate much faster from the skin, allowing it to focus on the heart notes. As a result, it is typically more expensive than the former three types.

5. Extrait de Parfum

Extrait de Parfum, also known as pure perfume or simply perfume, contains the most perfume oil - typically between 20-30%. It is highly concentrated and long-lasting; a small amount can go a long way.

6. Parfum

Parfum is a little more expensive because of its increased concentration. Anything above a concentration level of 30% is considered Parfum. This type lasts longer on the skin while providing the wearer with a full spectrum of top, heart, and base notes delivered for at least 8 hours and sometimes much longer.

Also, perfume is an intricate blend of notes that come together to create a unique olfactory experience. And these notes are classified into three categories- top notes, middle notes, and base notes.

Top notes

Top notes, also known as head notes, are the initial scents that you experience upon application. They are usually light and refreshing and evaporate quickly. However, they create a first impression and play a significant role in the overall fragrance profile.

Middle notes

Middle notes, also known as heart notes, emerge once the top notes have evaporated. These notes form the main body of the scent and last longer than the top notes. They are responsible for creating the theme of the fragrance and giving it depth and character.

Base notes

Base notes are the final and most long-lasting scents that emerge after the middle notes have settled. These notes provide depth, richness, and stability to the fragrance. They are usually not revealed until around 30 minutes after application, creating a lasting impression of the fragrance.

What is body mist?

Body mists are the perfect solution for those who desire a lighter, more subtle scent. Unlike perfume, which is highly concentrated with essential oils and lasts for hours on end, body mists are more diluted and contain a higher percentage of alcohol and water. This results in a refreshing, invigorating fragrance that doesn't overpower the senses.

Typically, body mists are used as a quick and easy way to freshen up during the day. They are also a popular choice during warmer months when heavy perfumes can feel too overpowering. However, due to their lower concentration level, body mists tend to wear off faster and may require reapplication throughout the day.
